The main differences between a blade server and a standard rack-mounted server
are the physical dimensions and shared components. Blade Servers are much
sleeker than rack-mounted servers and are designed for high density. However,
unlike a rack-mounted server that can essentially exist on its own, a blade
server requires an enclosure that houses other blade servers. While the standard
non-blade servers duplicate components among each server, blade servers share
the non-core computing services between them. A key benefit of this enclosure
set-up is energy efficiency. Ali Mirdamadi, Product Director at Cirrus
Tech, says “Our decision to purchase the PowerEdge Servers made sense from both
a business standpoint and an environmentally conscious perspective.” The Dell
PowerEdge Servers consume 19% less power and perform 25% better per watt than
competing products. Cirrus hopes to pass on these energy savings to its clients.
In addition to energy efficiency, the PowerEdge Servers allow for an
unsurpassed level of scalability, load balancing, and redundancy. With these
innovative servers, Cirrus Tech aims to introduce new services that utilize this
technology to its fullest. At the time of this writing, the PowerEdge
Servers were being tested at Cirrus Tech’s Toronto Data
Center.
